UNAMID welcomes amnesty for members of the armed movements

The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) welcomed the issuance on 8 March of a Presidential decree dropping death sentences from 66 members

of Darfuri armed movements and pardoning 193 others.

In a press statement issued from its headquarters in El Fasher Wednesday,March 15 2017,the mission stated that these positive developments come in the context of the ongoing mediation efforts undertaken by the High-level Commission of the African Union,the UNAMID and other stakeholders,as stipulated by the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur,and adopted by the UN Security Council resolutions and the AU's resolutions for peace and Security.

According to the press release of the mission,the Acting Joint Special Representative,of UNAMID,Jeremiah N. Mamabolo has expressed satisfaction over this important gesture an has called on all parties to the conflict to take advantage of the gesture to stop hostilities and reach a lasting peace for the people of Darfur.

UNAMID renewed via the press release its commitment to do everything in order to reach this goal.
